Agios Nikolaos in Georgioupolis is a charming little church tucked away in a rocky grotto along a narrow passage of the Kotsifos Gorge in Rethymno. Built on the site of an older, much smaller church that could accommodate only 5-6 people, this beautiful spot is steeped in history. The church features an altar separated from the main area by a shield, similar to the design of early Christian churches, and is home to an icon of Saint Nicholas. This icon replaced an older one lost during a battle in the area. The church’s feast day is celebrated on December 6th.
If you’re traveling south from Rethymno to Plakias or the Monastery of Preveli, make sure to stop by this serene location to light a candle and capture stunning photos of the canyon and the church. It’s a peaceful, picturesque spot well worth a visit.
